Language Arts

We worked on Georgia Milestone Practice pages.  We talked about how to write a great response.  If we are writing a 2 point response, we talked about how we need at least 2 reasons from the text to support our answer.  We also talked about reading our question first so we know what we are looking for when we read.  We can then underline or circle important information within the text.  We are going to begin reading groups based on what we need to work on for the Milestone.

This week we talked about graphs.  We talked about pictographs and bar graphs.  We learned/reviewed that you have to check for a key when you are working with a pictograph.  Sometimes each picture is worth 2, 5, or 10.  We have to pay attention to what each picture is worth.  With a bar graph we have to look at the numbers on the side to see what the scale of the graph is.  We also reviewed different questions that may go with graphs.  We reviewed that we have key words that tell us what to do.  For example, if we hear “how many more” we know we have to subtract.

We also talked about elapsed time.  This is something we have practiced through mountain math.  We reviewed and worked on using a number line to help us figure out how much time has passed.

*Please make sure your student is completing their math calendar each night.  We go over the problems everyday.  If your child has not completed it, they are missing out on learning.  They are welcome to do more than one column a night, but make sure they have done at least one column a night.

Notes and News

  • Mrs. Barnes is looking for volunteers to help with Field Day.  Please let me know if you are interested in helping our third graders have a great day!
  • Student pictures went home.  If you have not returned or paid for your pictures, please do so as soon as possible.
  • Please make sure you are checking your child’s agenda every night. This is where we write down our homework and upcoming tests.  I check their agenda each day to see if it is signed.  Encourage your child to be responsible and bring their agenda to you to sign; however, if you do not see it, please ask your child to see it.
