Language Arts

We talked about homophones.  We discussed the difference between through and threw, whole and hole, hour and our, knows and nose, there their and they’re, and tail and tale. We talked about the difference between these words and how to use them correctly.  We are going to be tested on these next week, so please make sure we know them.

We also began a nonfiction unit.  We talked about what a good nonfiction book should have.  We looked through many books to compare them.  Then we got our own book and decided if the author did a good job using nonfiction text features.

Read Aloud: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane By: Kate DiCamillo (We finished it!)

Math

This week we talked about area.  We reviewed what we talked about before break and then we began a project.  We are designing a house for an ant family.  We were given the area of the rooms and had to figure out what the dimensions might be.  Once we had a list of dimensions, we discussed what the best one would be.  We then used construction paper to measure and cut out the rooms.  We were able to practice area and measurement at the same time!  We are going to continue this project next week and work on perimeter.

Notes and News

  • Report cards are coming home today.  Please look over them, have a discussion with your child about their progress, sign the front, and have your child return it to school.  I do not need the contents inside.
  • Two book order forms went home last week.  If you would like to order, please go online (www.scholstatic.com) and enter our class code (GKW3Z).  You may also send the form in with your child and pay with a check (no cash).  Please send in orders or order online by 2/5/16.
  • Please make sure you are checking your child’s agenda every night. This is where we write down our homework and upcoming tests.  I check their agenda each day to see if it is signed.  Encourage your child to be responsible and bring their agenda to you to sign; however, if you do not see it, please ask your child to see it.
