Language Arts

We talked about the words to, too, and two. We talked about the difference between these words and how to use them correctly.  We have a reference page in our grammar journal to help if we forget.  We are going to talk about there, their, and they’re next week.

We did an opinion writing this week to review what we talked about in writing before break.  Our prompt was “Do you think kids get too much homework”. As always, students had to give evidence from the text. Of course we felt like we get WAY too much homework.  ;)

This week we talked about and practiced a new homework paper we are going to have beginning next week.  Students are going to have math homework each night that consists of 9 problems.  The problems are a mixture of skills.  Some of the skills we have already covered and some are coming soon.  I told the students that they can skip one problem a night if they are completely stumped and do not know how to complete a problem.  If it is a problem we have not covered in class, have your child attempt the problem.  We are going to review the skills in class the next day.  If they miss it, it is okay.  I really like these papers for several reasons.  The homework reviews skills we have already discussed.  This helps students retain information we have already covered.  It also helps preview skills we have not formally talked about.  This is nice because your child will already be exposed to the skill and vocabulary before it is taught.  Again, we will discuss these each day so the students can see how each problem is done.  These homework pages will be posted in your child’s eclass page each Monday in case your child forgets it at school or misplaces the paper throughout the week.  I told them they can print it or write the problems down on a sheet of paper to solve them.  The expectation is that the paper is worked on each night.  Your child may work ahead if they wish, but we will only check one row a day.  Please feel to email me if you have any questions about this homework.

Notes and News

  • Since this was a short week, Friday Folders will go home, but no conduct sheet will be included.  We will have a conduct sheet next Friday.
  • Two book order forms are going home today.  If you would like to order, please go online (www.scholstatic.com) and enter our class code (GKW3Z).  You may also send the form in with your child and pay with a check (no cash).  Please send in orders or order online by 2/5/16.
  • Please make sure you are checking your child’s agenda every night. This is where we write down our homework and upcoming tests.  I check their agenda each day to see if it is signed.  Encourage your child to be responsible and bring their agenda to you to sign; however, if you do not see it, please ask your child to see it.
